Exploring Arches National Park: A First-Timer’s Guide
Hello friends! I’m thrilled to share my first-time experience exploring Arches National Park. With the help of my local guide (hint: my boyfriend), I uncovered some great tips for making the most of this breathtaking destination.
If you read my last post, Catering a Christmas Party in Moab: A Chef’s Perspective, you’ll know we were in Moab for an event. We decided to stay overnight to explore Arches the next day, and let me tell you—exploring Arches National Park was absolutely worth it!
What to Expect at Arches National Park
Arches is huge, so be prepared for a full day of exploration. The park is filled with stunning red rock formations, but the real magic lies in the hidden beauty that requires some effort to discover.
Prepare for the Desert Environment
Utah’s desert climate can be harsh, especially if you’re from a humid place like Costa Rica. Therefore, here are some tips to stay comfortable:
- Wear the Right Gear: Comfortable hiking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are must-haves.
- Moisturize: Bring body oil or really good lotion to protect your skin from dryness.
- Stay Hydrated: Water is essential—carry plenty with you!
Getting Started: Tickets and Visitor Center
To enter the park, you’ll need to purchase a ticket. You can buy them here, which will also give you access to helpful park details.
Next, stop by the Visitor Center, where you can learn about the park’s history, wildlife, and geography. This is also your chance to use the only flush restrooms in the park! Remember to bring hand sanitizer, as the other restrooms are vault toilets and some of them don’t have running water.
Exploring Arches National Park: What You Need to Know
Once you’re ready, drive deeper into the park. Each arch requires a hike, so it’s important to plan ahead. The trails range from easy walks to challenging climbs.
For example, the famous Delicate Arch requires a 3-mile (4.8 km) round trip hike from Wolfe Ranch parking lot. The trail includes uphill sections and slickrock, so it’s essential to prepare.
If you want to make the most of your time, plan to spend 4-6 hours in the park. Research the trails beforehand to prioritize your favorite spots while exploring Arches National Park.
